Derby County goalkeeper Roy Carroll has been suspended by the club for two weeks after a dressing room incident after the 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Chairman Adam Pearson has stated that no further details will be released about what happened. He did release a statement to the press though which claimed that Derby manager Paul Jewell had acted ‘strongly and decisively’ in order to deal with the situation.
Considering that Adam Pearson went of to say that the two week suspension would act as a ‘cooling off’ period for Roy Carroll, it could be concluded that the former Manchester United man reacted angrily in some way to the defeat at the weekend.
The suspension doesn’t only ban him from playing for Derby, it also means that he won’t be allowed to train with the players during the two weeks. The timing of the suspension means that Roy Carroll will return to the fold just before the January transfer window, so there has to be a chance that he will leave the club should the issues not be resolved.
Adam Pearson believes that Roy Carroll will return and ‘compete for his place in the team’ though and I suppose this is the best way for the situation to be sorted sufficiently. For Derby’s sake, the keeper would have learnt his lesson about what is considered appropriate in the dressing room.
As for the team as a whole, well they aren’t having the best of times in the Championship. They may have made it through to the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, but it is just one victory in their last seven league games and this has left them 16th in the table.
The football odds had favoured them for a promotion push a few weeks ago when they hit a decent run of form and they will be hoping they can climb there way up the table over the Christmas period. They will have to do so without the suspended Roy Carroll though.
