Middlesbrough sign Wales keeper Danny Coyne

John Williams - Monday 06.07.09, 14:47pm

Middlesbrough have signed welsh international goalkeeper Danny Coyne from Tranmere Rovers, as replacement for Russ Turnbull who left for Chelsea last week. The 35 year old is hoping that he can put some pressure on Middlesbrough number one Brad Jones for the goalkeeping jersey this season.

Coyne started his career with Tranmere before moving to Grimsby in 1999. He made over 200 appearances for Grimsby, many in the championship, before an ill advised move to Leicester City, who were then in the Premier league, in 2003. He played just five games for Leicester before moving to Burnley where he would stay for three seasons before a move back to Tranmere where he has been since 2007.

Danny Coyne was League One’s Golden Glove winner last season, he recorded twenty clean sheets in winning the award.

Coyne says that he is as fit as he has ever been and is expecting to push Jones for a first team place and hopes that he can contribute to Middlesbrough winning promotion to the Premier League.
