More Managerial Changes

Mike Roberts - Thursday 19.06.14, 11:48am

Couple of appointments to mention: Jose Riga took over at Blackpool and – more interestingly – former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has taken over from Oscar Garcia at Brighton.

My first reaction is that Hyypia’s appointment is more likely to be the successful one. Brighton may be due to suffer another playoff hangover but Hyypia’s playing experience in the Premier League and managerial stint with Bayer Leverkusen could be very useful.

I’m afraid I can’t say the same about Riga’s appointment. I got the feeling during his time at Charlton was that he was basically a company man parachuted into The Valley by the new owners to help the club avoid relegation, but as I mentioned a few times last season one of the reasons the Addicks were in trouble last season was because their cup run meant they were missing games. On the other hand, Blackpool is a far tougher job: I think they’ll really struggle in 2014/15.

Leeds have appointed former Forest Green Rovers manager Dave Hockaday following Brian McDermott’s recent dismissal. Hockaday has plenty of experience as a coach but none as a manager in the Football League and it’ll be interesting to see if he’s the right man to stop Leeds’ gradual but definite slide down the Championship.
