Sheffield United keeper Paddy Kenny has had his appeal against a nine month doping ban turned down by the Football Association. The player had been handed the ban for taking an over the counter cold & flu remedy that contained the banned substance ephedrine and the goalie had appealed on the grounds that the ban was too severe.

I really do feel for Kenny on this one, but as the FA said rules is rules and you have to take the appropriate steps when taking any medication, which are I believe to have a note from the medical staff to explain.

The FA said after the appeal, “The decision to impose a nine-month suspension was an appropriate measure.”

Kenny has been out since before the ban as he was first suspended by his club Sheffield United as soon as it was disclosed that he had failed the drugs test at the start of July. The subsequent FA ban runs from July 22nd and keeps Kenny out until April 2010.

Because of this misdemeanour the player will be subject to spot checks or target testing for drugs misuse over a period of two years.
