Watford appoint Brendan Rodgers as Manager

Steven Woodgate - Tuesday 25.11.08, 18:05pm

Chelsea reserve team coach Brendan Rodgers has been named the new Watford manager.

Brendan Rodgers takes over following Aidy Boothroyd’s recent departure, as the Hornets are one spot above the relegation places in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Caketaker boss Malky Mackay will stay on as a first team coach as his experience with the club will be vital if Brendan Rodgers is to turn the club’s fortune around.

There is potential at Watford as Mackay led the Hornets to a hugely impressive 3-0 win over promotion contenders Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.  The result made ex-Watford captain a firm favourite to take over as Watford manager on a permanent basis before the surprise appointment of Rodgers.

The former West Ham United player and assistant manager Frank Lampard Snr has joined as a football consultant to help matters. His experience will be valuable for Rodgers to succeed, as this will be his first time managing at first team level.

Brendan Rodgers told Watford’s website: “Frank is someone I have known for a little while now – he has great experience.

“He is a football man, an honest man and a loyal man. When you are a young manager, those are the key qualities you want from someone who is your mentor.”

Watford fans will remember Aidy Boothroyd taking over in similar circumstances. He remarkably led the club into the Premier League after defeating Leeds United 3-0 in the Play Off final back in 2006.

The Watford fans and board will be hoping for a similar success.

Rodgers, who is originally from Northern Ireland, was a successful youth academy director at Reading before joining Chelsea. He took up an important role in the development of Chelsea’s youth before being promoted to reserve team coach.

Do you think Rodgers is the right appointment to ensure Watford are playing Championship football next season?

I think Brendan is a good coach and he is probably the new impetus Watford needs.

I actually played with Brendan in a dad’s match one Boxing Day as both of our boys played forWoodley Zebras FC at the time!!
