A deal reported to be worth £4.5m will be struck between the clubs in the January transfer window should the player live up to expectations. The 24 year old currently holds down a regular first team place in the Republic’s World Cup qualifying team.

St ledger joined Preston from Peterborough three years ago and has made 139 appearances for them, he cost Preston £225,000.

Preston are reluctant to part with the defender but chairman Derek Shaw believes that the deal will help keep his club liquid in a financially tough league, saying:

“My honest view is if we don’t do this type of thing we’ll be getting 10 points deducted and we’ll end up going into administration.”

Following speculation on Friday last week, Brazilian striker Alfonso Alves has indeed joined Qatar league champions Al Sadd on a three year contract for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around £6million or around half what Middlesbrough paid for the player in January 2008.

Alves arrived at Middlesbrough from Dutch club Heerenveen, where the Brazilian could not stop scoring goals, but despite early promise the player could not reproduce that same form in the Premier League where he managed just ten goals in 42 appearances for the club.

Alves should find the pace of the Qatar league more to his liking, he will be playing for one of the top clubs in Asia and eleven times league champions in Qatar.

Alves has yet to play this season after undergoing surgery to a broken foot at the end of the last campaign, but is looking forward to the new challenge and also to linking up with compatriot Felipe Jorge in the Al Sadd team.

Choosing to forget his awful experience in the Premiership and the relegation of Middlesbrough, Alves instead clearly focused on the future when saying;

“I want to have great success with Al Sadd just like I did with Heerenveen in Holland in 2007 where I scored a lot of goals and I hope that I can do the same with Al Sadd.”

Former Everton and Arsenal player Francis Jeffers currently with Sheffield Wednesday has been handed a maximum club fine and transfer listed following his sending off in the Carling cup second round defeat to Port Vale.

Jeffers appeared to head butt and punch Port Vale captain Tommy Fraser, for which he was shown a straight red card in the 37th minute of the game.

His actions left Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws fuming, despite the player apologising for his actions. “His conduct was totally unacceptable and something this football club will not tolerate from any player” says Laws on the club website.

“The kind of behaviour enacted on Tuesday night is completely unacceptable and does not represent what Sheffield Wednesday stands for and clearly sets a bad example for the game of football. We have therefore enforced the heaviest punishment available to the club with immediate effect and transfer-listed the player.”

Jeffers began his career at Everton making his debut in 1997, days before his 17th birthday. A much publicised row over a pay rise ended with Jeffers moving to Arsenal in 2001 for £8million.

The player has been dogged by injuries and attitude throughout his career and has never managed to fulfill his early promise at Everton.

Leroy Lita has signed for Middlesbrough today on a free transfer having finished his contract with previous club Reading in June. Earlier reports suggested that Lita had been made offers from Sheffield United, Leicester and Norwich, but the player has opted for Middlesbrough.

Lita spent most of last season away from the Madjeski Stadium with loan spells at Charlton and Norwich after falling out of favour with Reading. The 24 year old is looking to kick start his career with Brough.

The troublesome Mido has been packed off to Egypt , on loan to Zamalek for this season. The player really does have a serious attitude and is frustratingly inconsistent but once in a while does something special. But Gareth Southgate has done the right thing to ship him away, without doubt.

Sheffield United have moved quickly to find cover for goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, who is awaiting the outcome of a failed drugs test. The Blades have signed Blackburn Rovers Mark Bunn on one months loan.

Kenny has been suspended by United after a urine sample that he provided after the play off semi final game against Preston proved positive for the banned stimulant Ephedrine.

The player must wait for a FA disciplinary inquiry to decide what punishment he will receive. As the drug can allegedly be found in some cold and flu medicines it does not carry an automatic two year ban, although in some cases in Rugby the full sentence has been applied.

Dexter Blackstock has joined Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee on a four year contract. The 23 year old striker had made an impression on Forest bosses during his six match loan spell at the end of last season.

Blackstock becomes the eighth signing to be made by manager Billy Davies during the summer and has always been high on the Forest managers list of targets.

The former Southampton and Plymouth player will find himself as one of six strikers at Forest, where competition is going to be very keen for a starting place. Blackstock’s good friend and team mate at Southampton, David McGoldrick joined Forest earlier in the summer and DeleAdebola is also a new addition. They will be fighting for places with last seasons strike force of Robert Earnshaw, Nathan Tyson and Joel Garner.

Exciting times ahead for Forest without a doubt.

Blackpool have signed Jason Euell on a free transfer from Southampton, the 32 year old midfielder has agreed a 12 month deal with an option of a second year.

Euell is the second free transfer to arrive at Blackpool this summer following 21 year old Billy Clarke from Ipswich Town. Blackpool manager Ian Holloway says that he has long been an admirer Euell who he says is one of the fittest 32 year olds you will find, adding, “He can play in a variety of roles and although the lads might not know it yet we’ve got a good player on our hands.”

Euell started his career in 1995 with Wimbledon where he spent six years before moving to Charlton for £4.75million in 2001. A misguided move to Middlesbrough in 2006 was followed a year later with a transfer to Southampton, where he has recently had to endure the politics of a club going into administration as well as being relegated.

Nottingham Forest have completed a double swoop for Tottenham defender Chris Gunter and Preston North End midfielder PaulMcKenna. Welsh international Gunter, who spent two months on loan with Forest last season has been signed on a permanent contract of four years, for a fee of £1.75million.

The 19 year old was bought by Spurs from Cardiff in January 2008, but has made no secret of his desire to join Forest, after his successful loan spell. “I wasn’t interesting in moving anywhere else. There was never a temptation to look at other clubs who were supposedly interested.” says Gunter.

Forest have been pursuing McKenna all summer and had been rebuffed by Preston on three occasions before agreeing a deal worth £750,000 for the 31 year old. McKenna has signed a three year contract with Forest despite being a one club player since the age of 14. He has played 469 games in his time at Preston, and says, “It was a massive change for me , but I think it was time for that change.”

McKenna added “Coming here has given me a new lease of life and I’m really excited about that challenge ahead.”
