Hull City win promotion to the Premiership

Terry Lane - Sunday 25.05.08, 12:20pm

Hull City beat Bristol City 1-0 yesterday at Wembley Stadium in the Coca-Cola Championship Playoff Final to gain promotion to the Premier League; the first time in their history that Hull City will play in the top division of English league football.

The game wasn’t a goal fest as I had imagined but was a very open, attacking and entertaining game of football to watch. Hull capitalised on the lion (or should that be tiger!) share of the possession in the first half with a fantastic volley from 39 year old Dean Windass.

Dean Windass started his professional career  with Hull City 17 years ago.  He has played for several teams including Bradford and Middlesborough before returning to is home town team.

In the second half Bristol City battered the Hull defence and had a few chances to take the game into extra time. But Hull held on for a momentus victory.

Unfortunately, the dust hasn’t even settled and the talk is now of whether Hull, West Brom & Stoke will be able to survive more than one season in the Premier League.

I have to be honest. I think at least two of these teams will be relegated. If I had to put my money on it now, it would be the obvious choice of Stoke and Hull. They may make Derby look like they have had a successful season.

I thoughtHull would have a good chance of survival, but then heard manager, Phil Brown suggest he is going to stay loyal to the squad of players that got Hull promotion.

The term ‘doin’ a Derby!’ comes to mind!
